Style Salute: George Michael #RIP

2016  has been the year of the loss when it comes to pop culture.  This past year we have seen legendary figures such as David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, and Rick Parfitt leave the earth. Yesterday, we lost another with the passing of 80’s  mega star, George Michael. Michael died at his Oxfordshire, England home, aged 53, on Christmas Day. According to his manager, Michael Lippman, the cause of death was heart failure, and British police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Michael is on the most underrated pop – stars of all time. He rose to fame in the 1980s as part of pop duo Wham!, he founded with Andrew Ridgeley.  Together they produced infamous songs such as “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” He later forged a successful career as a solo artist, selling more than 100 million albums with global hits such “Faith” and “Freedom.” Tha latter of which video popular in fashion circles due to it having,  Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz,  and Naomi Campbell lip syncing the lyrics throughout the video.

During the Eighties, Michael was one of a legion of British musicians – along with Duran Duran and Boy George – to embrace androgyny, wearing eye makeup, highlighting his thick mane of hair with blond streaks, and donning stacks of glow-in-the-dark bracelets and fingerless gloves.

In those years he was never without his white, baggy slogan T-shirts, reading “Feed the World” or “Choose Life.” He later swapped his colorful clothing for lots of black leather and shorter hair. Later in his career, Michael continued to mix within fashion circles his 2012  song “White Light” with another famous face in fashion: Kate Moss, cultivating in their classicOctober ’12 cover of French Vogue together.
