I recently had the pleasure of trying out some of the new and exciting products offered by The Art of Shaving, as well as interviewing some of the industries leading experts on all things skin. As you probably know from trial and error, shaving is a scary and uncomfortable topic for many gentlemen. Let’s face it (no pun intended), shaving is a chore and many times it can leave an individual’s skin irritated or permanently damaged. This is especially true for men of color, but all hope is not lost. There is sunlight on the horizon as the experts at The Art of Shaving have developed a line of products designed to tackle and mitigate complications associated with traditional shaving.
I have to admit; I was a little apprehensive at first as I have always strayed far-far away from using a razor. Very early on in my shaving journey, I experienced severe irritation that ultimately scarred and left my skin hyper-pigmented. I never really found a system that worked for my sensitive skin, until I tried the products from The Art of Shaving. They have such a vast array of products that are gentle, effective, and innovative. You have to try the shaving system, it makes the process simple and relieves the stress that many men experience shaving. After using the product for sometime my skin feels amazing! The presence of razor burn/ irritaion or ingrown hairs (which was typical for me prior to using The Art of Shaving system) is non-existent.
So let’s talk about the real game changer! The Power Brush System has alleviated some of the most common complaints associated with shaving (ingrown hairs and razor bumps). The Power Brush along with the Unscented Pre-Shave Gel help to reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs by gently exfoliating while deep cleaning the skin. When I used it I noticed an extreme difference in the look and feel of my skin. My shaving experience took less time and I was left with little to no irritation on my face or neck! Basically The Art Of Shaving Power Brush is a compact miracle worker that prepares your facial hair prior to shaving. This in turn, allows for a close and clean shave without the added irritation. Trust me, you can say goodbye to razor bumps and ingrown hairs as they are a thing of the past with the help of the Power Brush System.
Check out my Q & A below from Dr. Jared Jagdeo, MD, MS and Genevieve Bochanty (Director of Education at The Art of Shaving).
- How often should I be exfoliating?
Genevieve Bochanty: This depends on your skin and the type of exfoliation you use. The Power Brush can be used daily to exfoliate the skin to assist in shaving and the skin’s overall healthy appearance. Some people will choose to further exfoliate with a facial scrub designed for even deeper cleansing and exfoliation. This is best done 2-3 times per week depending on skin sensitivity.
Dr. Jared Jagdeo: I recommend that men avoid using products that have not been clinically tested to exfoliate their skin. Exfoliating with non-dermatologist tested products may cause more irritation than benefit.
- What is the cause of razor bumps?
Genevieve Bochanty: While some of it is the genetic tendency of the hair type; coarse and curly versus straight, poor technique in shaving also can cause shaving bumps. When you cut the hair at an angle, versus at the base, you can create a thin, sharp tip of the hair that can re-pierce the skin and create a razor bump and in-grown hair.
- Why are African American men prone to getting razor burn?
Genevieve Bochanty: African American Men are more prone to in-grown hairs and razor bumps due to the predisposition for tight, coarse curly beard hair, which possesses a higher risk to grow back into the skin than straight hairs.
- Is there a method of shaving that prevents or reduces ingrown hairs?
Genevieve Bochanty: Our Power Brush Regimen was clinically tested and we saw very promising results. The Power Brush reduces the occurrence of ingrown hairs and razor bumps significantly within the first month* and delivers up to a 69% reduction in the occurrence of razor bumps**. Use with The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Gel for Power Brush for a gentle exfoliation and massage to the skin, helps increase the release of ingrown hair by up to 85% over the course of 12 weeks.
(*Daily shaving using a regimen of The Art of Shaving 2 in 1 Power Brush with Power Brush Gel, ProGlide Flexball Razor and TAOS 4 Elements Regimen, compared to shaving with shave cream alone
**After 12 weeks of daily shaving using a regimen of The Art of Shaving Power Spin Brush with Power Brush Gel, ProGlide Flexball Razor and TAOS 4 Elements Regimen, compared to shaving with shave cream alone.)
Dr. Jared Jagdeo: A regimen is key to help prevent and reduce ingrown hairs. I enjoy sharing with my patients that prevention of razor bumps is much easier than treating razor bumps! The various aspects of a good shaving regimen help prepare the face for the shave, and post-shaving, the moisturization step helps healing of the freshly shaven face.
- Do you recommend using an electric razor or traditional razor to shave?
Genevieve Bochanty: The benefits of wet shaving daily with a complete regimen have visibly smoother results than using an electric razor alone particularly for men suffering from in-grown hairs and razor bumps. Our clinical tests showed the Power Brush Regimen helps increase the release of ingrown hair by up to 85% over the course of 12 weeks with daily shaving*. (After 12 weeks of daily shaving using a regimen of The Art of Shaving Power Spin Brush with Power Brush Gel, ProGlide Flexball Razor and TAOS 4 Elements Regimen, compared to shaving with shave cream alone.)
Dr. Jared Jagdeo: For the men who use an electric razor or a traditional razor to shave, my professional tip as a dermatologist for those seeking a fresher, smoother shave is making sure the cartridge or blades are in good condition, as dull blades may end up pulling the skin resulting in more nicks and razor bumps and burn. Replacing the cartridge or blades regularly is key here!
6. Describe a highly effective shaving regimen.
Genevieve Bochanty: An effective shaving regimen is one that gives you the results you need while also addressing your specific shaving and skin concerns. Our 4 Elements of the Perfect Shave: Prepare, Lather Up!, Shave and Moisturize addresses each main need throughout the shaving process. We have developed products and educate men in proper techniques and different ways to complete your shave for smooth results.
- How should I care for my skin to minimize outbreaks?
Dr. Jared Jagdeo: I recommend gentle skin care – wash your face with a gentle soap and warm water twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. Avoid picking the face and avoid washcloth or loufah use to the face, as the abrasive properties of both may generate microscopic holes in the skin that allow bacteria to enter and cause breakouts. Visiting a board certified dermatologist to help guide your skin care plan is a fantastic next step.
- What is the advantage of using the power brush over traditional methods?
Genevieve Bochanty: The Power Brush exfoliates the skin and prepares the beard hair by using a pre-shave gel which when used with the full Power Brush Regimen helps prepare the hair for the shave. This benefits men prone to in-grown hairs and razor bumps. How you choose your regimen will depend on your shaving needs and issues you are currently experiencing.
- How often should I change The Art of Shaving powerbrush head?
Genevieve Bochanty: We recommend every 3 months or as needed.
- Are there any particular products from the Art of Shaving that you recommend for men of color?
Genevieve Bochanty: Our Power Brush Regimen is a great solution for men of color looking to help reduce the occurrence of in-grown hairs and razor bumps. In addition, our overnight balm intensely hydrates skin and improves skin’s overall appearance.
